Important HOME Foundation Meeting is Sunday

The Annual Home Foundation meeting will be held at First St. John Lutheran Church (on highway) Sunday, January 22, 2012 at 3 p.m. Due to the closing of the Wellness Center on December 31, 2011, discussions will be held with the options for the revenue that was made during the sale of the equipment. Discussions will also be held in regards to options for the future of the Home Charitable Foundation.

Please plan to attend this meeting as your input is important to us. The mission of the Home Charitable Foundation is to enrich the quality of life in our community and the surrounding areas. We would greatly appreciate the communities support and ideas in this process.

TR State Champ Football Celebration is January 29

The public is also invited to share in a state championship ring ceremony after the signing. Players, please plan to be in attendance to receive your rings.

What is the Northern Plains League (NPL)?

Perhaps some of our readers are just as confused as your correspondent is when the school calendar states that the NPL Basketball Tournament will be held this week. NPL stands for Northern Plains League which takes the place of the Cheyenne Conference of which Kensington and Eastern Heights were members before the consolidation to Thunder Ridge. There were also numerous other consolidations in the area. With some of the new names for the districts and new schools added to the League, perhaps the following paragraph will help identify the schools that Thunder Ridge will be competing with in the Northern Plains League.

There are fifteen districts involved in the Northern Plains Basketball League this year. They are Lakeside (Downs/Cawker City); Rock Hills (Mankato); Wilson; Thunder Ridge; Natoma; StJohn Beloit/Tipton; Lincoln; Sylvan Grove/Lucas; Tescott; Chase; Logan; Pike Valley (Scandia/Courtland); Palco; Northern Valley; and Southern Cloud (Glasco/Miltonvale)..The NPL tournament this week is being played in four locations--Tescott, Sylvan Grove, Lincoln High School and Lincoln Elementary School, concluding on Friday and Saturday evening. All final games on Saturday will be played at the two Lincoln gyms. Please consult the sports section for further information as to time and location of games. (The KKAN/KQMA station and also the Salina Journal give daily updates.)

Thanks to Don Wiens, Thunder Ridge coordinator who has been working with the set-up of the NPL tournament, for the following comments to answer many questions about the NPLtournament. Don writes "St Xavier is a private school from Junction City. They were invited to make an even number of teams (16) to compete in the tournament. To accommodate the schools hosting as well as the traveling schools, the sites and times of play were adjusted for Monday’s schedule. The host schools are furnishing people to take tickets, run the clock, and serve as hosts. Therefore, they are playing at their home sites as much as possible. Traveling teams were assigned back to back games as much as possible to avoid long waits for fans and teams. The cooperation of all 16 schools has been very good and has allowed this scheduling to take place as smoothly as possible.

The schedule for Tuesday’s games will be done after Monday’s games. (I realize this will be old news by the time the paper comes out.) A bracket will then be set up to show advancement for the last 3 games of the tournament for each school. Saturday’s games will include all schools playing in one of the two Lincoln sites. It will be a full day of basketball starting at 10:00 a.m. Sorry it has to be so confusing at this time, but the magnitude of a tournament effort such as this makes it a real challenge for everyone. The great part is that all the schools involved are willing to do whatever they can to make this a positive experience for the schools and players involved."

A large crowd enjoyed the American Legion Riders' noon breakfast at the Legion Sunday at the Legion Hall despite that your correspondent listed the menu as pancakes and sausage when they were serving biscuits, sausage, and gravy along with homemade cinnamon rolls. My apologies to the Riders who provided the delicious meal. Proceeds will go for flags and other equipment for the Riders.

The employees and board members of the Kensington Community Store were busy Sunday doing inventory. They report it went well and were finished in good time.

Duane Smith of Bellingham, Wash., remains in the hospital, but is doing much better. Mail from 'home" is always appreciated.

Don and Jan Hoverson went to Brewster Sunday to help their grandchildren, Brielle and Brylee, celebrate their January birthdays at the home of their parents, Jon and Lynda McKee.

It you enjoyed the nice weekend weather with temps n the 60's on Sunday, be prepared for a cool-down and possible light snow on Monday night. It's been an unusually warm, dry winter to date, and the weather men predict a nice warm-up again for the end of this week.

Something to think about this week--"Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place; but far more difficult is to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment." Unknown.
