St. John Lutheran Church Celebrates
125th Anniversary
Although a formal celebration of the
125th anniversary of the signing of the
charter of the St. John Lutheran Church
was held on a snowy stormy day in
February, 2010, a finale homecoming
celebration of members, former members,
and many friends was held Sunday, Sept.
5, 2010, on a holiday weekend so more
could attend.
The opening hymn, "The Church's One
Foundation", called the full house of
worshippers together for the Holy
Communion service at 10:30 a.m. with the
Rev. Patsy Koeneke, pastor of the
congregation presiding. She chose to
make Holy Baptism the focal emphasis for
the day. Special music was rendered by
the St. John Mixed Chorus who sang
"Rejoice Ye Pure in Heart", and the
Sunday School Children singing "We are
Children of St. John" and "I Have
Decided to Follow Jesus." They and many
other parishioners proudly wore the
apple green t-shirts with the logo,
"Fully Rely on God", designed for the
special event. The memorials given
during the year were also dedicated.
Cameron Cate, infant daughter of Bruce
and Amber Hardacre, joined the Body of
Christ through the Gift of Holy Baptism.
Her sponsors are Kiley and Katie Beach
and Martin and Tara Seemann. Her sister,
Elizabeth Hardacre, played the piano
offertory, "It is Well with My Soul."
Jenny Reilley sang "Footprints in the
Sand" and Carol Rahjes and Dawn Meyer
played piano duets during the
distribution of Holy Communion.
After the benediction was pronounced and
the sending hymn, "Lift High the Cross".
was sung, the congregation was
dismissed, and photos were taken of the
mass group in front of the church. The
Grauerholz family then gathered for
their annual reunion in the parish hall.
At 3 p.m., the anniversary committee
assisted by many volunteers began moving
tables and chairs to the north lawn pf
the church property and to prepare the
food for the early evening picnic. Quilt
and memorabilia displays along with a
power point presentation prepared by
Luke Rahjes were set up in the parish
hall.
Although temperatures were predicted to
be near the century mark, light winds
and temps in the low 90's made the
outdoor evening very tolerable without
pesky flies and mosquitoes. The crowd
began arriving early and after the table
prayer had been sung, the hamburgers,
hotdogs, beans and chips were served
about 5:30 p.m. followed by homemade ice
cream with cake prepared by Bev
Grauerholz.
Former pastors were introduced by Leland
Rahjes, chairman of the anniversary
committee. Paul Anderson of Omaha, Neb.,
son of Pastor Andy and LaVaille Anderson
of Wallingford, Iowa, represented his
parents who were unable to attend
because of frail health. A daughter and
husband, Gloria (Anderson) and Mark
Shuckman of Great Bend were also in
attendance. Other former pastors
and wives, David and Anita Sites of
Holdrege, Neb., and Frank and Shirley
Pekarek of Salina, were also introduced
and addressed the assembly. A balloon
launch was held.
Music was presented by Sarah Rudd and
her band and the The Three Amigoes
(Galen Larson, Wendell Bohm and Dave
Hutson). Games were arranged for
the children during the program. Carolyn
Billings gave a brief history of the
congregation and acknowledgements were
given by Joyce Grauerholz of the many
volunteers who work diligently to bring
the gospel of Jesus Christ to the
congregation and community. Greg
Billings, chairman of St. John Lutheran
Church, thanked everyone for making the
celebration such a blessed event, and
the assembly sang, "God be with You Till
We Meet Again.".
The evening of fun and fellowship
concluded with fireworks and wishes and
prayers for many more years of God's
blessings upon the St. John Lutheran
Congregation.

Around
the Community
Arthur Smith was in a Wichita hospital
last week for observation and testing.
He received a pacemaker which is working
well.
Kent Smith of Bellingham, Wash., has
been here helping his parents, Duane and
LeAnn Smith, temporarily move into an
apartment at Country View while a crew
from Hays is cleaning their home which
received heavy smoke damage in a fire
last week. It was fortunate that the
classes at the University where he
teaches had not started making it
possible for him to spend more time
here.
Lori Collier of Ft. Scott spent the
weekend with her mother, Norma Conaway.
She came especially to attend the Smith
reunion at the Athol Community Hall on
Sunday.
Pastor Dave and Anita Sites of Holdrege,
Neb., were guests of Anita's mother,
Phrocene Hoff, and her sister and
husband, Janis and Ted Mogan.
Be sure to notice the interesting
wildlife display at the Kensington
Community/School Library made possible
by Jamie Reneberg when you come in to
check out books, magazines, tapes, or
DVD's.
About 100 attended the Grauerholz
reunion at the St. John Lutheran Parish
Hall Sunday noon. A more complete
account will be available next week.
Ann Vaughan of Manhattan spent the
weekend with her aunt, Ruth Bienhoff.
Because of the holiday weekend, this
column will be short. Any items turned
in later will be included next week.
Prairie Haven notes are not available.
A cool front is moving through northern
Kansas as this column is written Monday
afternoon. A nice shower of rain would
be welcome as farmers prepare the wheat
fields for seeding and fall crops are
finishing out their fall growing season.
Thought for the week for the sports'
enthusiasts--"The trouble with being a
good sport is that sometimes you have to
lose to prove it."
