Veterans Respected with Memorial
Services
The temperatures were cool but the north
winds had subsided somewhat to keep the
flags furling on the cemeteries as
members of the Kensington Legion,
Auxiliary and Sons of the American
Legion gave impressive ceremonies to
honor our veterans at the six cemeteries
in the area.
Auxiliary member Karen Pollock read the
names of the veterans as flags were
placed on their final resting places.
Madeline Reneberg and Larissa Dettmer
sang the National Anthem while the honor
guard and assembly stood at attention.
After the 21-gun salute had been fired,
taps were played by Nolan and Robin
Billings and Deb and Trent Ferguson.

Devastating Flood of Memorial Day, 1935
Remembered
The Sunday Salina Journal carried the
story of the 1935 devastating flood on
the Republican River which created such
havoc after torrential rains ranging of
up to a foot or more fell in western
Nebraska and Colorado beginning on May
31. Your correspondent remembers her
family driving to Franklin, Neb., (which
was a long trip in those days) to see
the raging waters going downstream and
creating such devastation to towns,
farmsteads, bridges, etc. along the
river. Sadly, all of this roaring and
wasted water which created huge damage
of property, farm ground, loss of human
lives and animals did nothing to
alleviate the drought and dustbowl in
Kansas where it still forgot to rain.
This flood prompted the building of dams
along the river to prevent another
tragedy of this magnitude from
happening. Take the time to ask the
old-timers while they are among us to
relate these stories to you as they are
a part of our history.

Around
the Community
Sympathy is extended to Loren and Elda
Lyon on the death of Loren's brother,
Mike Lyon, 62, long-time resident of
Phillipsburg, on May 22. Graveside
services and inurnment were held at the
Belmont Cemetery, Phillips County,
Friday morning.
Seth Kastle of Wichita suffered a heart
attack Saturday and also has pneumonia,
but is in stable condition according to
his mother, Melanie Elliott. He will
receive a defibrillator on Tuesday and
hopes to be released by the end of the
week if all goes according to plan.
Cathy Diercks had hip replacement
surgery Wednesday evening in Kearney,
Neb., and will be moved to Hays Regional
Medical Center Tuesday for
rehabilitation and therapy.
Congratulations to former Kensington
resident, Marj Meyer, and Pat Anderson
of Wichita who were married on May 22 in
Wichita. A reception was held at the
Hometown Buffet. Attending from
Kensington were Newton and Bonnie
Youngquist and Betty Tuxhorn.
Laura Beth Bienhoff of London, England,
and Jennifer Bruns of Clarkfield, Minn.,
spent last week with their parents and
sister, Paul, Deb and Leah Bienhoff,
coming especially to help Leah celebrate
her 10th birthday and for Laura to
attend her 10th class reunion.
Charlotte and Eva Young moved to
Belleville over the weekend to be nearer
her mother and other relatives.
Charlotte has employment in a rest home
in Belleville..
Thursday afternoon callers of Ruth
Bienhoff were Doug and Sue Gray of
Salina and John Hamilton of Lawrence.
They were in the area decorating Bierman,
Allard, and Reneberg graves at the Olive
Branch and Germantown Cemeteries. Mark
Bienhoff of Des Moines, Iowa, was Ruth's
houseguest over the weekend while
attending his 40th class reunion.
Granddaughters Laura and Leah Bienhoff,
Jennifer Bruns, and Emily Levin and Lyla
were also special visitors.
Lois Hrabe enjoyed having some of her
family visit over the weekend and to
attend alumni activities and the
ceremony at the cemetery. Spending a few
days with their mother were Mike and
Diann Hrabe of Canton and Melinda and
Lee Mazzarella of Colorado Springs.
Lindsay and Matthew Hrabe of McPherson
arrived Sunday evening to visit their
great-grandmother.
Errol and Marla Baumann hosted a brunch
at their home Sunday morning for members
of the Kensington Class of 1970 that
were able to attend. They enjoyed
further reminiscing along with delicious
refreshments.
The swimming pool opened last Saturday
with a large crowd enjoying the water on
a hot and windy day. As usual in Kansas,
if you don't like the weather one day
you have only to wait until the next
day. A cold front accompanied by strong
north winds moved in during the night
with temperatures in the low 70's on
Sunday which was quite a contrast from
the low 90's the end of last week. The
Kensington area received about 1.5
inches of rain during the past week, but
little chances of moisture this week
will have the farmers keeping long hours
to catch-up on all the work waiting for
them.Family staying with Max and
Sharilyn Currey over Memorial weekend
was Donald and Cathy Bronson and Micah
of Stephensville, TX and Travis and
Tiffany Bronson and Abby of Overland
Park. On Sunday afternoon they were
joined for the Struckhoff family
barbeque in the Currey backyard. In
addition those attending were Marlene
Marquez of Hutchinson, Bill Struckhoff
and Cory Struckhoff of Kensington,
Leslie Struckhoff of Burlington, CO,
Kathern Struckhoff and Christophor of
Osawatomie, Sam and Linda Rice of Athol,
and Jason and Jennifer Rice, Jackson,
Avery, and Jamison of Olathe.
