Benefit Dinner for Bohms Next Sunday

A benefit is planned for Tyler and Tiffani Bohm Sunday noon, May 16, at the Kensington Legion to help with Tyler's medical expenses. He has been diagnosed with lung cancer and is unable to work. Serving will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Freewill donations will be taken for the meal. Thrivent has agreed to match up to $1500.

On the menu will be pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, potato salad, and fruit cobblers. Local churches are helping with the food which will be prepared on Saturday and help is needed to serve the meal on Sunday. If you are willing to help or contribute food, contact one of the committee members, Ty and Jennifer Wallgren, Brett and Melissa Westbrook, Tim and Annette Riley, Donna Westbrook or Melanie Elliott.
 
Thunder Ridge to Graduate 16 Seniors

Sixteen students will receive their diplomas in commencement exercises Saturday, May 22 at 5 p.m. in the high school gym in Kensington. The Valedictorian and Salutatorian will address the audience, but, according to school custom, their names will not be revealed until the ceremonies. Each senior will be acknowledged in a power-point presentation as a part of the program. A receiving line will assemble in front of the gym, weather permitting.
 
Memorial Services Sunday, May 30

The Kensington American Legion Post #166, Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion will conduct memorial services at area cemeteries on Sunday, May 30.
The group will worship together at the UCC Church in Athol at 9:00 a.m. They will then go to the various cemeteries at the following schedule:

St. John Lutheran Cemetery at Athol, 10:15 a.m.; Pleasant View (Myers) Cemetery, 10:40 a.m.; and St John Lutheran Cemetery at Kensington, 11:30 a.m.

The group will have dinner at the Legion Hall at noon before continuing to the other cemeteries as follows: Olive Branch Cemetery, 1:15 p.m.; Stone Cemetery, 1:50 p.m.; and Germantown Cemetery, 2:15 p.m.
 
Class of 1970 to Have Reunion

The Class of 1970 will be having a 40th Class Reunion at 1st St. John Activity Center prior to the Alumni Banquet on Saturday, May 29. They would like to invite any former students, teachers and parents that would enjoy visiting to stop by the activity center from 3 p.m. until the time of the banquet.

The KHS Class of 1970 has the distinction of being the largest class to graduate from Kensington High School with 37 in the class. They are looking for a large group to come back to celebrate this reunion.
 
Goldbug Class of 2000 Reunion

The Kensington Goldbug Class of 2000 is planning a 10 year reunion on Sunday, May 30th, at 2 p.m. at the Kensington Roadside Park. Guests are asked to bring a finger food and drink of their preference. Cups, plates, napkins, cutlery, etc. will be provided. Classmates, come and look forward to a fun afternoon of catching up and reminiscing!
 
Bible School Planned

Parents are urged to postpone vacations until after Community Vacation Bible School has been held. The dates chosen for this year are June 1 to 4, 9 00 to 11:30 a.m.
The theme is "SonQuest Rainforest...Jesus Every Day!"

The locations will be the same as in the past with Preschool thru Grade 1 at First St. John Lutheran, Grades 2 & 3 at the United Church, and Grades 4 thru 6 at St. John Lutheran Church. Every child in the community is invited.
 
Bob Bearley Recognized at Achievement Banquet

About 170 persons' attended the Thunder Ridge High School Achievement Banquet at the Kensington Legion May 6. Don Wiens served as Master of Ceremonies and introduced the speaker, Caley Cole Robinson, a 2003 graduate of West Smith County High School and now a teacher in the Phillipsburg schools. She encouraged personal encouragement to all students. At one point in her presentation, she asked of ways people in the audience to stand if they had been encouraged by someone. such as a teacher, sponsor, parent, coach, friend, etc. As she named possible responsible persons and soon everyone in the audience was standing. She asked everyone to be aware that they have a responsibility to our students by giving encouragement in all their endeavors.

As the students' names were called, packets containing all their honors, awards and scholarships (academic, music, speech, scholars bowl, athletics, etc.) were presented to them by one of the faculty. During the scholarship presentation by Jamie Schwandt and Seth Kastle, Bob Bearley was recognized by them for his many years of positive influence through teaching and coaching and the fact that Bob had touched the lives of countless students through his support and encouragement. Mr. Bearley was given a standing ovation to show gratitude for his caring and unselfish effort on behalf of all of his students.

Seniors were presented special awards as follows: American Legion Citizenship Award--Ryanne Rahjes and Trent Ferguson; Kansas State High School Activities Association Award--Cheyenne Grauerholz and Cade Rietzke; Kansas Board of Regents Scholarship Curriculum Completers--Christopher Cochrun, Trent Ferguson, Nicholas Irwin, Ryanne Rahjes & Taylor Shaffer; Kansas Board of Regents State Scholar Designee--Trent Ferguson; KSU Mathematics & Science Award--Christopher Cochrun; Dale M. Dennis Excellence in Educatino--Christopher Cochrun.

Kyle Youngquist Graduates

Kyle Youngquist has completed his high school studies and received a diploma from Thunder Ridge High School recently. Congratulations, Kyle.
 
Birth

A daughter, Cameron Cate, was born to Bruce and Amber Hardacre on May 6 at the Smith County Hospital. Cameron weighed 8 pounds 2 ounces and was 19 3/4 inches long. She has two very excited sisters, Elizabeth, 9, and Abigail, 5, who will help with her care. Grandparents are Curtis and Mary Beach of Kensington and Tom and Susan Hardacre of Athol.

Around the Community

Aldean Franklin, Marla Baumann, Kristen Minkler, Jayden Minkler, Brandon Baumann, Julie Cole, Rilee Weeks, and Jayme Baumann went to Columbia, S.C.., to attend the wedding of Aldean's niece, Stephanie Moore, to Kevin Sox on Saturday morning, May 1. The wedding was on the ocean front at Edisto Beach, S.C. The group was delayed a day in Nashville, Tenn., on their way home because of the floods.

Nick Robinson, son of Bruce and Lisa Grauerholz of Hildreth, Neb., graduated from Axtell Community High School in Axtell, Neb., Saturday afternoon, May 8 at 4 p.m. Nick has enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and will leave in September. A reception was held for Nick and seven of his classmates in Minden, Neb., Friday evening. Nick's guests were his parents and brother, Bruce and Lisa Grauerholz and Lantz, Howard and Barbara Grauerholz, Brook and Lindsay Johnson, Hannah Ramirez, Rachel Jones and Faber, Bob and Amy Bienhoff, Blayne Bienhoff and Ariel Robinson, and Justin, Deidra and Peyton Chestnut.


Martin and Florence Stenseng went to Jamesville, Wisc., Sunday to visit their grandchildren, Kiefer and Evelyn Stenseng, and their mother, Margit Stenseng Patterson. They went especially to attend Kiefer's orchestra concert at Rock County Jr. College on May 11 in which he plays the cello. They were to return home Wednesday. They were assisted in getting to the Kansas City Airport by their daughter, Margaret and Brad Johnson of Lawrence.

A large crowd attended the Mothers' Day dinner at the Kensington Legion Sunday noon with a quite a few out of town guests. Proceeds will be used for high school scholarships.

Brad and Mona Marler of Tipton, Iowa, visited their daughter Amanda and Brian Schultz and family is Osborne over the weekend and also visited Fred and Dolores Panter of Athol.

Prairie Haven notes are not available this week.

It's a gloomy, cold Monday as these notes are written with intermittent light rain. The forecast is for thunderstorms, possibly severe in places, for the next several days. It puts a damper on track meets and outside activities along with field work and planting that the farmers are hoping to get done.
 

New officers for Kensington Auxiliary

The Kensington Legion Auxiliary had election of new officers on Tuesday, May 4. Elected are co-chairpersons, Earlene Brons and Cheryl Foreman; V. Chairperson, Wilda Conaway; Secretary, Staci Foreman; Treasurer, Vivian McDowell; Sgt. of Arms, Karen Powell; Historian and Chaplain, Donna Westbrook.
 
Events at the Kensington Community Center

The Board of Directors will meet Wednesday, May 12 at noon; Pitch will be played Thursday, May 13 at 7 p.m. May birthdays will be celebrated Thursday, May 20 at noon. Pinochle party is Tuesday, May 25 at 7 p.m. The Center will be closed Monday, May 31 for Memorial Day.
