Students off to Washington/New York

Two busloads of students from Thunder Ridge, Logan, Northern Valley, Phillipsburg and Smith Center high schools will leave Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. to begin their trip to New York and Washington, D.C. Barbara and Merlin Dennis will again be their tour hosts.

In addition to the regularly scheduled activates each year, such as Gettysburg, Hard Rock Cafe, Rockefeller Center and the Top of the Rock, "Mama Mia" Broadway Show, The Statue of Liberty and the ferry ride to Ellis Island, they will be visiting the Sony Wonder Technology Lab in New York City. Some of the adults will go to an additional Broadway show, "Jersey Boys", while the students are ice skating at Rockefeller Center. Of course, be sure to check the students out on the Today Show on CBS at 8:30 a.m. CDT Saturday morning.

They will visit the Capitol and Mall area and many museums in Washington, D.C., along with the National Geographic Museum and the Tera Cotta Warrior Exhibit. Tad Felts will be accompanying the group and have reports from the students on KKAN/KQMA several times each day until their return on Thursday, March 25.

Making the trip from Thunder Ridge High School will be Sammy Krueger, KimbraLee Adams, Justin Abbott, Tyler Rose, Dylan Pruett, Koltin Dennis, Cory Rahjes, Zach Horn, and Dakota Coomes.Their sponsor is Mrs. Annalee Ratliff. Carol Rahjes and Kim Dennis are the parents/adults who will also be on the trip.
 
Pro-Ag Marketing Assn. has Annual Meeting

The Producers Agricultural Marketing Association, Inc., annual meeting was held Tuesday evening, March 10 at the Kensington Legion Hall. Registration along with handing out patronage checks was held before the smothered steak supper was served to about 150 persons by Legion members beginning at 6 p.m. Board member Don Wiens gave the invocation.

Chairman of the Board of Directors William Jones called the meeting to order with a quorum of 63 voting members present. The notice of the annual meeting and the minutes of the last meeting were read by secretary Donald Grauerholz. The minutes were approved as read. Other board members present were Robert Bienhoff and Kerry Ferguson.

Greg Doughhetee of Lindburg, Vogel Public Accountants of Hays gave the audit report. He reported a very good year for Pro-Ag and congratulated the organization on their success. The report was accepted as printed.

Paul Bienhoff of the nominating committee presented the name of Tim Riley as a new board member from the south-west district to replace Robert Bienhoff. He was elected by unanimous ballot. B. J. Westbrook was voted as the new member of the nominating committee to serve with Jason Dennis and Paul Bienhoff for the next election.

Manager James Jirak announced that Bob Hunter was chosen to receive the Leonard Fink Award as the outstanding employee of the year. Bob was ill and his wife, Jeri, accepted the plaque in his absence. Mr. Jirak went on to say that it was a record year for all crops harvested in the area. He told of the dismantling of the two wooden elevators that had been landmarks of Kensington for many years. He reported on the many improvements made during the past year as well as future plans for the organization. A plaque was presented to Robert Bienhoff for his years of service on the Board of Directors.

Names for door prizes were drawn as follows: cordless drill to Greg Keeton; mag flashlight to Kenneth Ratliff; $25 gift certificates to Steve Miller, Robin Billings and Duane Smith; flowering plants to Wanda Fink, Donna Jean Townley and Carolyn Billings; tee-shirts to Jerry Rietzke, Loren Larrick, Dorothy Detwiler, Warren Larrick, Desiree Ferguson, Brian Dettmer, Virginia Willis, Wesley Rahjes, and Tim Riley; Rain gauges and tape measures were given to all members.
 
KAYS Blood Drive at Library.

The KAYS are hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive at the Kensington Community/School Library on Tuesday, March 30. There will probably be some appointments that can be filled by community members. Contact the school office at 476-2217 and leave your name and number and information will get back to you with available appointments.
 
New Books at Kensington Library

The Kensington Community/ School Library has many new books available for check-out. Also, be sure to come in to see the beautiful quilts on display.

Adult CD's available are Worst Case by James Patterson, The Help by Kathryn Stockett, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.

Junior fiction for the younger readers are The Easter Egg by Jan Brett, Jack and the Leprechaun by Ivan Orbertson, The Story of the Easter Bunny by Katherine Tegen, and The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney (new Caldecott winner). New Junior non-fiction includes Listen to the Wind: The Story of Dr. Greg & Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson.
 
Toney Brothers at United Church Friday Evening

If you like men's gospel quartette music, you won't want to miss the annual program by the Toney Brothers Friday evening, March 19 at 7 p.m. at the United Church of Kensington. They have included Kensington in their tour interarry for a number of years, and the appreciative audience usually fills the church. Freewill donations will be taken.
 
Athol Firemen's Pancake Supper Saturday

The annual pancake supper benefit to the Athol Firemen will be held at the Athol Community Hall Saturday evening, March 20 with serving from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The usual menus of pancakes, sausage, ham and scrambled eggs will be served. Donations will be taken to benefit the Athol Firemen who often assist the Kensington Firemen and other units when conditions warrant. Your support will be appreciated.

Automatic Door Opener at Center

The new automatic door opener on the south entrance of the Kensington Senior/Community Center was installed by Norton Glass last Thursday with Mark Migalski and George Powell helping with the electrical connection. Come in and try this handicapped device to make the Center much more accessible for those needing assistance.

The March birthdays will be celebrated at the Kensington Senior/Community Center Thursday noon, March 18. Pinochle will be played Tuesday, March 30 at 7 p.m. Come join in the fun and fellowship.

Winners of the pitch games on March 11 were Donna Westbrook, high; Barbara Grauerholz, low; and Gilbert Kuhlmann, most 13's.

Death of Boyd Ritter

Boyd H. Ritter, 85, of Esbon, died Friday, March 12, 2010. He was a police officer in Kensington for a number of years until his retirement. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; a daughter, Tonja Westerman of Kensington; two sons, Larry of Hill City, S.D., and Gary of York, Neb.; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Among the local grandchildren are Tara Seemann, Trina Hrabe, and Jarik Wagenblast and their families, all of Kensington.

A memorial service will be held later as cremation has taken place.
 
Around the Community

George and Sandy Powell drove to Wichita Saturday to spend time with George's oldest sister, Lillie and family, and to attend the funeral of his brother-in-law, Irvan Range, Monday morning. Sympathy to George and Sandy, too.

Aleen Schalansky has returned to Prairie Haven following a hospital stay in Phillipsburg. Eulonda Hagman has returned home after a short stay in the Smith County Hospital.

Sympathy is expressed to Virginia Abbott on the death of her brother-in-law, Tom Hensley of Ashland, March 9. He is survived by his wife Claudette, a sister of Virginia, who resides in a nursing home in Ashland. Mr. Hensley served in the Military Police in Japan with Loren Larrick of Agra and the late Evan Kinyon of Kensington.

Sympathy also goes to Susan and Floyd Gross on the death of Susan's father, Bill Chadwell, last week. The funeral was Monday. No other details are available.

Coming over the weekend to help Lelia Grauerholz celebrate her birthday were her children, Eldon and Marilyn Grauerholz of Cimmaron and JoAnn and Joe Wahrman of Goodland, and her grandchildren, Scott Grauerholz and Brian and Bonnie Grauerholz, Brooke and Bree of Kansas City.

Weekend guests of Dean and Darlene Miller were Stan and Lisa Miller of Denton, Tex., Ed and Janese Miller of North Platte, Neb., and Tim and Denise Miller and family.

Paul, Deb, and Leah Bienhoff spent the weekend with their daughter and sister and husband, Jennifer and Ryan Bruns of Clarkfield, Minn.

Five members of the K-town Kates and three guests attended the play, "The Wizard of Oz", at the Minden Opera House in Minden, Neb., Sunday afternoon. Enjoying the delightful production were Ruth Levin, Deb Levin, Jeanne Bogart, Loretta Struik, Georgetta Kinyon, Suzanne Faulkner, Aldean Franklin, and Ruth Bienhoff. They had supper at Black Powder in Franklin enroute home where they also celebrated Ruth Levin's birthday. .

Trent and Taylor Streeter of Topeka are visiting their grandparents, Linda and Leland Rahjes, during spring break

Jack and Shirley Smith of Wichita were houseguests of Esther Norden while they visited Shirley's mother, Lorraine Grauerholz at Prairie Haven.

Light rain fell last night and the clouds are still prevalent. Farmers are wishing for sunshine to dry the cattle lots to make calving chores easier. It is to warm up mid-week, but possible rain and even light snow is forecasted for Friday evening.

Morning came early with the clocks being shoved up an hour because of Daylight Savings Time. Like the Old Indian said, "You cut the top off the blanket and sew it onto the bottom." It is good that the children are on spring break and have a whole week to get used to getting up earlier. \

Notes from Prairie Haven

Greeting and exercises begin each day. One-one sessions are held daily. Nail care was done Monday. Flying kites and famous pig stories kept conversation lively Monday. Current events were reported Tuesday and bingo was played.

The Adopted Grandkids came for their monthly visit Wednesday morning. They often bring things to share or games to play. The residents love their visits. Words were discussed in the afternoon.

Jenny Reilley did hair cuts and styling Thursday morning. Ruth Bienhoff of St. John Lutheran Church had the Thursday morning Bible study as Pastor Patsy was officiating at Jack Rose's funeral. A quiz on Presidents was enjoyed in he afternoon. The local news was read from the Pioneer Friday morning and March birthdays were celebrated in the afternoon. The usual card games and watching movies and television were Saturday activities.

First St. John Lutheran Church had the Sunday afternoon worship service with Pastor Dave in charge.

Congratulations to Mary and Montra Jones who will celebrate their 64th wedding anniversary on Friday, March 19.
