Kensington Escapes Deluge of Rain Over the Weekend

Kensington escaped the heavy rains which fell in intermittent severe thunderstorms Saturday night and again Sunday night. The Bienhoff rain gauge measured about three inches of rain in the two day total. No reports of hail were reported in the immediate vicinity. Rainfall became less north of town. Forecasters indicate that another round of storms could develop for the area this (Monday) evening. With the wheat rapidly turning and harvest looming, the muddy fields, water in draws and terraces, and washed out roads will pose a problem for harvesters.

Folks in the Solomon Valley soon believed the weather report when heavy thunderstorms with the possibility of hail and wind were forecasted Saturday night and again Sunday night. Rain gauges reported from 6 to 8 inches of rain in the Claudell area with water going over bridges and washing out approaches, isolating farmsteads until the water receded and repairs could be made. The washed out roads and bridges, repairing of fences, and mud and standing water will pose a tremendous problem for the fast approachng wheat harvest. Outages of electricity were also reported in many areas with lots of tree damage. The basement home of James and Jennifer Elson who live on the farmstead spith of Claudell, best identified as the home of the late Glenn and Eleanor Sweat, was flooded to within an inch of the main floor. Hail was reported in some areas with strong winds commonplace.

More detailed stories and pictures will appear elsewhere in this issue.
