Rain Halts Harvest Completion
As this column is written Monday
morning, light rain is falling and
thunderstorms are in the forecast for
later today. Rain Sunday morning of
about .60 in Kensington City brought the
harvest to a halt. A few farmers were
fortunate to finish Saturday evening
before the rains came. The sun did come
out after lunch on Monday and the
stalled front seems to have moved on
east taking the chance of thunderstorms
with it so perhaps harvest can resume
soon.
Conversations overheard by your
correspondent were that yields ranged
from good to disappointing with great
variations in test weights. The top
yields are usually the only ones
reported, but it is evidently not the
bumper crop everyone was hoping for.

Around
the Community
Lynn Evans of Cheyenne, WY, who grew up
in Kensington as the son of the late
Eddie and Clara Evans, has cancer and
other health problems. He would enjoy
hearing from former Kensington friends.
His address is Lynn Evans, 7207
Manhattan Lane, Cheyenne, WY 82009-2004.
Logan and Beth Burns returned home from
the Children's Hospital in Aurora,
Colo., Sunday where Logan had several
surgeries. We wish him a speedy
recovery.
Spending the long July 4th weekend with
Linda and Leland Rahjes and to help
Linda celebrate her birthday were Kelly
and David Streeter, Trent and Taylor of
Topeka and Scott and Lisa Heike and
Kirsten of Shawnee.
Last Friday supper guests of Ada Gaines
were Therron and Barbara Gaines of
Savannah, MO, JoAnn Rice, and Linda and
Larissa Dettmer. Sunday evening a family
gathering was held at the home of Steve
and JoAnn Rice to celebrate the holiday
and Staci Kearn's birthday. Present were
Rick and Staci Kearn and family of
Concordia, Ada Gaines, and J.R. and
Angel Rice and girls. Linda, Brian and
Larissa Dettmer and Katie Holsman came
later in the evening for ice cream and
cake and to watch the fireworks.
Neighbors and friends came in one
afternoon last week with six combines
and a number of trucks to harvest the
wheat of Kenneth Rose who is battling
cancer. The job was completed in three
hours.
Mary Anthony enjoyed having her
daughter, granddaughter, and
great-granddaughters come over the
weekend. They are Pat Gaschler and
Brandy Veatch and daughters, Jordyn,
Taylor and Sidney.
Local gardeners are beginning to reap
the harvest of their labors. We hear new
potatoes, beets, cucumbers, and even a
few early tomatoes gracing their dinner
tables. The grass is keeping the lawn
mowers busy.
The weather was perfect for the
fireworks Sunday evening around town,
They were spectacular and continued late
into the evening. With no wind and the
rain earlier in the day, there was no
danger in shooting them. Sadly, the dogs
in town did not appreciate the loud
noises.
Because of the holiday, Prairie Haven
notes are not available. |
