St. John Lutheran Church is Challenged
to Continue to “Sing Praises to God”
The 2 to 3 inches of snow that had
fallen and continued lightly during the
day failed to dampen the spirit of
celebration of the 125th anniversary at
St. John Lutheran Church of Kensington
Sunday morning, Feb. 21, 2010. The only
regrets were for those that had planned
and were unable to attend because of the
inclement weather.
The theme of the day, “Singing Praises
to God for 125 Years”, was demonstrated
as the Handbell Choir opened the
old-fashioned hymn sing by playing “
Come Christians Join to Sing” followed
by the congregation singing numerous
favorite hymns accompanied by organist,
Dawn Meyer. The singing concluded with
the rousing hymn, “A Mighty Fortress is
Our God”, accompanied by trumpets.
The processional hymn, “Lift High the
Cross”, was sung with the Handbell Choir
and trumpet accompaniment as the Holy
Communion worship began with Pastor
Patsy Koeneke presiding. The banner for
the day was designed by Cindy Rahjes.
Melissa Westbrook was the assistant
minister and Greg Billings, president of
the congregation, served as lector.
The children’s sermon was given by Joyce
Grauerholz who spoke of the meaning of
the celebration. The children were
struck with awe as a cake with 125 unlit
candles was brought into the sanctuary
to indicate the number of years of the
church's celebration. The children then
sang several songs directed by Robin
Billings..
Special music was featured throughout
the worship by the adult choir, handbell
choir, Jenny Reilley, Robin, Nolan and
Kendra Billings, Carol Rahjes, Dani
Riley, and Melissa, Morgan and Maycee
Westbrook.
The guest speaker was the Rev. Dr.
Gerald Mansholt, Bishop of the Central
States Synod of the ELCA. He used the
gospel text for the day from Luke 4:1-13
for his sermon theme. He dwelt briefly
on the past history of the congregation
stating that when crisis as well as good
times happened, God was there with His
steadfast love and goodness. Dr.
Mansholt dwelt on the promise that God
sent Jesus Christ for healing and the
transformation of hearts and redemption
of lives. He proclaimed that God is
still working and living in the church
and in the hearts of its people. He
challenged the assembly to continue to
“Raise your voices in praises to God” as
they continue in the proclamation of
God’s grace through Jesus Christ in the
future..
The worship concluded with the singing
of the Doxology and the triumphant hymn,
“Lead On, O King Eternal.” A dinner was
served in the parish hall where
fellowship continued. The 125 candles
were lit on the anniversary cake as
“Happy Anniversary” was sung. The
children blew out the candles and the
cake was served to them. Reproductions
of pictures from former celebrations
were used as table decorations.

Around
the Community
John Edmonds was admitted to the Smith
County Hospital last Wednesday for
observation and treatment. He was
dismissed and returned home Monday.
Joseph Burns was transferred to the
Salina Regional Medical Center Tuesday
and had emergency kidney surgery later
in the evening. He is doing as well as
possible.
Aleen Schalansky is a patient at the
Phillips County Hospital for treatment
of an infection. She is making daily
improvement and hopes to return to
Prairie Haven soon.
Dorine Kuhlmann returned to Prairie
Haven Tuesday from the Smith County
Hospital for additional skilled care of
a blood clot in her leg.
Garen Diercks reports that his wife
Cathy hopes to return to their home in
Agra the end of the week from Hays
Regional Medical Center where she has
been having therapy.
Pastor Becky Saddler is confined to her
home on doctor's orders for acute
bronchitis. She missed worship service
Sunday morning and Dianna Rice read
Pastor Becky's sermon which she had
prepared. We wish this very busy pastor
a rapid recovery.
During the past few weeks, Lois Hrabe
enjoyed having her family visit at
different times so everyone could attend
various community activities. Mike and
Diann Hrabe of Canton spent a long
weekend with Lois, and they all enjoyed
seeing their grandsons, Blane and Benton
Hrabe, play at school basketball games.
Joining them for evening meals were
Joel, Kindra, Blane and Benton Hrabe and
Dan, Trina, Raini and Owen Hrabe. Duke
Hrabe of Tempe, Az., surprised his
mother with a weekend visit enroute to
his home from a business trip in
Pennsylvania. He felt fortunate to
depart on schedule from the eastern
snowstorms and then head on to warmer
weather in Arizona. Melinda Mazzarella
of Colorado Springs, Co., spent the last
five days with her mother, but returned
home earlier than planned because of
predicted inclement weather.
Janice Kuhlman of Grand Island, Neb., is
spending time with her mother, Mildred
Dettmer.
After lots of gloomy weather, the sun is
shining today (Monday). It's always
amazing how a bright day lends cheer to
all. Winter will persist this week
though as snow flurries and cold
temperatures are forecasted, but it is
only four more weeks until spring.
