TRHS School Achievement Banquet May 6
The Thunder Ridge High School
Achievement Banquet is scheduled for
Thursday, May 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the
Kensington American Legion. Tickets for
the banquet are $3.00 per person and
must be purchased before May 5 from the
High School Office. The guest speaker
will be Caley Cole-Robinson. The
Achievement Banquet is the setting for
the awarding of all student honors and
Senior scholarships and awards.
The meat will be furnished for the meal
and each student's family is to bring
two (2) of the assigned dishes as
follows: Freshman Class--salad or
vegetable dish, Sophomore
Class--dessert, Junior Class--salad or
vegetable dish, Senior Class--potatoes.

Spring Tea at St. John Lutheran Church
All women, young and old, are invited to
the Spring Tea at St. John Lutheran
Church (North) Sunday afternoon, May 2
at 2 p.m. The theme for the tea is
"Walking with Jesus." Melissa Westbrook
is planning the program and has secured
Brian Maydew as the guest speaker. If
anyone needs a ride, please call the
church office at 476-3155 or Melissa at
476-3209 (evenings).

Good Ratings at State Music Contest
Thunder Ridge High School students were
in Wichita Saturday for the State Music
Contest. The high school girls double
trio and Madeline Reneberg, vocal solo,
received I ratings and Trevor Lowe,
vocal solo, received a II. Mrs. Kristi
Reneberg, director, is very proud of
these Thunder Ridge musicians and thanks
Mrs. Sandy Thomas for her excellent
talent of accompanying and support.

Music Programs May 11
Mark your calendars for a full evening
of music by the students of Thunder
Ridge Elementary, Middle and High
Schools at the Middle School Auditorium
in Agra on Tuesday, May 11. Kindergarten
thru Grade 8 will perform at 6:30 p.m.
and the High School will have their
program at 7:45 p.m. You may attend
either or both programs as there will be
a short intermission between the two
sessions. Mrs. Reneberg will direct the
program and Mrs. Thomas will be the
accompanist.

KHS/TRHS Alumni Meeting May 29
The Class of 1990 will be hosting the
Kensington/Thunder Ridge High School
Alumni Banquet on Saturday, May 29, at
the Kensington Legion Hall. All classes
graduating with "0" will be honored.
There will be an open house at the high
school from 3 to 5 p.m. followed by the
social hour from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at
the Legion. Honored class pictures will
be taken during the social hour. The
banquet will be served at 6:30 p.m.
Banquet tickets are $15 and will not be
sold at the door. Pre-paid tickets may
be picked up at the door as they will
not be mailed. Please send your payment
to Kensington Alumni Association, P.O.
Box 72, Kensington, KS 66951 and make
your reservations by May 7. For further

No Athol Alumni or Homecoming this Year.
The Athol Alumni and Homecoming will not
be held this year. A gathering is
planned for the Sunday evening of
Memorial weekend in 2011. Mark this date
and plan to attend next year.

14. High School Commencement will be
Saturday, May 22 at 5 p.m. in the high
school gym in Kensington.
The Middle School Achievement Banquet

(Watch for place.) Eighth grade
orientation at the high school in
Kensington will be Wednesday, May 19.
The Middle School Promotion will be
Tuesday, May 25 at 7 p.m. in the Middle
School Auditorium in Agra. The last day

Center
There will be a May Day potluck dinner
at noon at the Kensington Community
Center, May 1. All ages are invited to
come, wind the May pole and help make
May baskets for shut-ins. Table service
and drinks will be provided.

Johnson/Engelke Wedding
Carmen Johnson and Trevor Engelke were
married at the St. John Lutheran Church
near Athol Saturday, April 24 at 5:30
p.m. The reception and dinner followed
at the Kensington Legion Hall.
Carmen is the daughter of Nancy Johnson
and Brad Johnson. She graduated from the
Phillipsburg High School and is employed
by Thunder Ridge School. Trevor is the
son of Duane and Chrys Engelke and
graduated from Kensington High School.
He is employed with Pro Ag Marketing.
The couple will make their home at rural
Kensington.

Grauerholzes Enjoy Tour
Howard and Barbara Grauerholz returned
Friday from a 16 day bus trip with
Prudent Tours to the eastern states.
They were gone 16 days, including 17
states, and traveled 4,500 miles.
Their first stop enroute to Washington,
D.C., was the Kentucky Horse Park in
Lexington, KY, and the Robert Lee Chapel
& Museum in Lexington, VA. They spent
four days in Washington, D.C. Highlights
were the U.S. Capitol, Washington,
Jefferson, Lincoln and Franklin D.
Roosevelt monuments, WWI, WWII, Korean,
Vietnam, Air Force, Iwo Jima, and Marine
Corps memorials, Arlington National
Cemetery, John F. Kennedy Center, US
Marie Corps Barracks, Smithsonian
Institution,. and Ford Theatre and
Peterson House.
Going on to Philadelphia they visited
Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.
They spent three days in New York where
they had a 3-hour boat tour, and visited
Upper and Lower Manhattan, Statue of
Liberty, Ellis Island, Top of
Rockefeller Center, and the Battery and
Central Parks.
It was on to Plymouth, Mass., where they
toured Plymouth Rock, the Lexington,
Concord, Cambridge and Civil War battle
fields, and Harvard University Campus.
The next stop was Boston, Mass., and the
Freedom Trail, Boston Common, Beacon
Hill and Old North Church. They toured
the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning,
NY and then on to Niagara Falls, the
Notre Dame Campus, Herbert Hoover
Library at West Branch, IA, John Deere
Museum at Moline, IA, and Amish Country
Store in Lamoni, IA.
Howard was especially impressed with the
Korean Memorial and Barbara enjoyed
Ellis Island where her grandfather, Fred
J. Holthus came from Hanover, Germany,
in 1886. He went back to Germany to
visit his mother and returned to America
in 1895 with his bride, Margareta
Oentrick, and they were married in New
York. Howard stated that security was
much greater in Washington, D.C., then
when they had been there 18 years ago.
They saw only a few demonstrators.

Around
the Community
JaCea Reece, daughter of Seone Reece and
a Kindergartener at Thunder Ridge, has
been a very ill little girl, but after
spending last week at home recovering,
she returned to school Monday morning.
Sympathy to Melba and Arthur Kuhlmann of
Athol on the death of Melba's brother,
Roger Quinn, 68, of Smith Center on
April 20. The funeral was last Saturday
at the All Faith's Chapel in Smith
Center.
The notice of the death of Alta Mae
Wachs, 75, of Clinton , MO, on April 11,
2010, appeared in last week's issue of
The Advocate. She is the wife of ElDean
Wachs who grew up in Kensington and
graduated from Kensington High School in
1955. Among the other survivors are
three sons and her sister-in-law, Ardyce
Wiehl of Phillipsburg. The funeral was
April 15 at the Trinity Lutheran Church
in Clinton, Mo.
Jhett Johnson was honored for his first
birthday Saturday evening, April 24,
when his parents, Brock and Lindsay
Johnson and brother hosted a supper of
hamburgers, salads, cake and ice cream.
Attending were his great grandparents,
Lloyd Johnson and John and Shirley Beim
of Phillipsburg and Howard and Barbara
Grauerholz of Kensington; grandparents,
Ken and Tina Johnson of Phillipsburg,
Cody and Paula Lyon of Kensington and
Bruce and Lisa Grauerholz and Lantz of
Hildreth, Neb. Other families attending
were Bob and Amy Bienhoff, Justin and
Deidra Chestnut and Peyton, and Josh and
Hannah Ramriez of Kensington; Blayne
Bienhoff of Hastings, Neb., Ariel
Robinson of Manhattan, and Rachel Jones
and Erin Kimberling of Smith Center.
A group of friends gathered at the L & E
Cafe in Kirwin for lunch last Friday to
celebrate their mutual birthdays.
Enjoying the day were Mildred Dettmer,
Goldie Brunow, Alice Rietzke, Evelyn
Levin, Maria Seemann, Evelyn Norden,
Eulonda Hagman, Lelia Grauerholz, Ruth
Levin and Ruth Bienhoff.
Amy and Guy McNutt of Wisconsin were
visiting their aunts, Cecilia Grauerholz
of Phillipsburg and Marie Wangerin of
Kensington and Priscilla Porter of
Hastings, Neb., , and uncle, Paul
Seemann of Smith Center, along with many
other Seemann relatives in the area. Amy
is the daughter of the late Julie (Seemann)
and Bob Landvetter. Amy and Guy came
especially to attend the wedding
reception of Klare (Zillinger) and David
Givans in Phillipsburg Saturday evening.
Klare, the daughter of Marcia Zillinger
and Kerry Zillinger, and David were
married in Hawaii on April 16, 2010.
Dennis and Judy Graf of Bassett, Neb.,
visited friends in Kensington over the
weekend coming especially to attend the
wedding of Trevor and Carmen (Johnson)
Engelke Saturday evening.
Visitors for a long weekend of Don and
Janet Hoverson were Don's sisters, Donna
Loyd of Overland Park and Sandra Black
of Garden City.
Elton and Dot Haarberg were supper and
overnight guests of Ruth Bienhoff Sunday
evening. They were enroute to visit
their son in Virginia.
This area received about 1.70 inches of
rain in showers that fell all day
Thursday and into the night. Since that
time, the wind has been blowing typical
of April in Kansas.

Prairie Haven Highlights
Each day begins with greetings and
exercises. One-one sessions are held
routinely. Bingo is played on Tuesday
and Friday afternoons. Nail care is done
on Monday and the beauty shop is open on
Thursday.
The United Church had the Thursday
morning Bible study followed by visiting
and fellowship. Other weekday activities
included trivia, current events, food
and nutrition, state of Wisconsin, bird
quiz and getting caught up on the local
news being read from the Pioneer.
Puzzles are always is various degrees of
completion and television and movie
watching are enjoyed.
The Unied Church of Kensington had the
Sunday morning Bible class and afternoon
worship services.
