TR High School to Present "Stepford Students"

Teachers, wouldn't it be great to have your students behave like model citizens? To get requests for homework?. Well, its not a dream, just come to see how it is done st Stepford University in the comedy play, "Stepford Students" to be presented by the Thunder Ridge High School at the Middle School Auditorium in Agra at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, and again on Sunday, Nov. 14. Mrs. Emily Blank is the director and tickets will be available at the door.

Like the movie namesake, "The Stepford Wives", things aren't exactly as they appear. You see, student Greg has created the de-agitator, a futuristic gizmo that zaps students into line! In exchange the cushy semester has given it to Mrs. Holcroft, the feisty economics teacher, Ms. Graham, as old as the dinosaurs, and Ms Yearling who is a bit wet under the collar. When student Ralph thinks he is onto it, nobody wants to believe him...until he ends up with a de-agitator which looks an awful lot like a TV remote. Now he and his buddy Barry are out to rule the school.

Meanwhile...the resident nerd, Arnie, and two math and science whizzes, Megan and Linda, are off on a science experiment of their own. They believe they can create a radar-like device that will deflect signals back to their senders. Nobody else is much interested in this idea until there is a showdown at the OK Student Lounge. Ralph, Greg, Barry and the professors face each other in a cowboy showdown with de-agitators blazing away and Arnie, Linda and Megan save the day.

Cast members are Pat--Jacob DeLang; Linda--Jackie Reneberg; Megan--Ryanne Rahjes; Trish--Breck Miner; Arnold--Nathan Larson; Ms. Graham--Sammy Krueger; Mrs. Holocroft--Madeline Reneberg; Ms. Yearling--Larissa Dettmer; Ralph--Trent Ferguson; Barry--Chris Cochrn; Greg--Trevor Lowe; Shirley--Emi Fuentes; Stella--Sheila Dues; Penelope--Devoeny Coomes; Darcy--Shelby Gordon; and Production Specialist--Michaela Bienhoff.

Dear Ruth:  Just finished reading this week's Smith County Pioneer and decided this was a good time to get in touch with you. Bill and I both look forward to and enjoy reading the Kensington items even though we moved to Hays 48 years ago this month. I know it must be difficult to write your column each week when members of the community don't share their news with you, but those of us who live outside of the area do appreciate your hard work and dedication.  Greetings from Bill and Joan Emme  (Thanks Joan, and folks  please report your news as this is what people like to read. Ruth)

Joan states that Bill is still a "farm boy" at heart and is thrilled to be able to help a young farmer with the fall harvest. He also works part time at Truck Parts in Hays. He is back on chemo for a leukemia at this time, but is doing fairly well.

Around the Community

Danny Newbrey is having shoulder surgery at New West in Kearney, Neb., the forepart of this week. It is hoped it will alleviate some of the pain he has been experiencing.

Dixie Hesterman is scheduled for precarious surgery this week in Omaha on Thursday. Mrs. Hesterman teaches second grade at Thunder Ridge and will be missed by her students. Linda Rahjes and Tara Seemann will be taking over her duties until after the holiday break while she recuperates.

We're happy to report that Lori Miller was able to return to her home in Kearney, Neb. Home health comes in to help with the care of her fractured leg.

Denis and Wilma Sweat have a new grandchild. Quentin and Maria Stoll of Ankeny, Iowa, had a baby boy, Isaac Paul, on October 2, 2009. Maria developed preclampsia and they had to take the baby early by caesarean. Isaac weighed just 4 lbs. ½ oz., so spent almost a month in the hospital. Paternal grandparents are Paul and Helen Stoll of Yates Center. Wilma Sweat spent a week with her daughter and the family helping out with their new baby after he was able to come home Dennis drove up last weekend to get acquainted with their newest grandson and to return Wilma home since it was too wet to harvest milo.

Steve and Risa Bayliff, Trevor and Emily of Lakin and Justin and Tonya Lee, Colson and Camden of Thornton, Colo., spent the weekend here with Leland and Linda Rahjes.

Brian and Linda Dettmer drove to Arlington, Virginia, last week to visit Neal and Lori Dettmer and to deliver their wedding gifts which they could not take back on the plane. Jordan Dettmer of Manhattan came to do the harvest over the weekend and he and his sister Larissa kept things going on the farm during their absence.

The community Thanksgiving dinner will again be served at the Kensington Legion Hall on Thursday, Nov. 26 at noon. Watch for further announcements as the date approaches.

Indian summer has been enjoyed by everyone this week as temps climbed into daytime highs in the 70's and low 80's. Needless to say the combine crews have been busy with the fall harvest, and everyone hopes the lovely weather will hold for several more weeks. The milo pile on east highway 36 continues to grow. The railroad siding also has lots of empty grain cars so maybe some of the harvested grain can be shipped out.

The usual greetings, exercises and one-one sessions are held daily. The beauty shop was open Monday and manicures were given. Afternoon discussions included Laura Bush and other first ladies and pet peeves. Current events were shared Tuesday morning, and bingo was played in the afternoon. The Thursday morning Bible study was given by Ruth Bienhoff and visiting followed. Reminiscing about the year 1980 was done and nursery rhymes were recited in the afternoon. Bingo was played Friday afternoon. Movies and television shows along with card games kept the residents entertained over the weekend.

First St. John Lutheran Church had the Sunday afternoon worship service in the living room.

The residents are looking forward  to having the Kindergarten through Grade 3 students come to sing for them this Wednesday morning at 9:30. Children always liven up their lives with their vigor and enthusiasm. We thank Kristi Reneberg and her helpers for making this possible.
