Soup Dinner on Super Sunday at Community Center

The public is invited to the soup dinner at the Kensington Community Center on Super Sunday, Feb. 1. Serving of potato, vegetable , or taco soups, ham and beans, salads, relishes, and desserts will begin at 11 a.m. Donations will be taken and proceeds will be used for the Center.

Everyone is welcome. Come and enjoy a good meal and fellowship with your friends and neighbors before you settle in to watch the Super Bowl.

Planning Meeting for Thunder Ridge Steering Committee

The next Thunder Ridge Steering Committee meeting will be Sunday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. at First St. John Lutheran Church Parish Hall in Kensington. This meeting has been changed from Feb. 1. Plans will be made for the GNEC band clinic meal, the all school carnival, the achievement banquet for the Middle School, the achievement banquet for the High School, and the post prom. It is hoped there will be many people at this meeting to help with this planning. Everyone is asked to come, if possible, and show support for our Thunder Ridge School and students.

Thank you to all the volunteers that helped with food and serving the soup supper last week! You did a great job! Go Longhorns!!!.

Western Dinner to be Served by Music Club

The Music Club will be hosting a Smoked Brisket Chuck Wagon Dinner catered by Tim Riley Saturday evening, Feb. 14, at First St. John Parish Hall (on highway 36). Entertainment will be by Ron Sidman, Cowboy Poet, and western music by Dave Hutson, Galen Larson, Wendell Bohm, Sherry Newbrey, and Annette Riley.

The public is invited but only 100 tickets will be sold at $14 a plate on a first come, first serve basis. For reservations, contact Nancy Wangerin, Agra, at 638-2486 by Feb. 8.

Winter Prom at TJ High School

The lunchroom at the elementary school in Kensington was transformed into a lovely ballroom for the winter prom for the Thunder Ridge High School sponsored by the KAYS and Student Council. The theme for the evening was "Winter in Central Park." A large number of students and their dates enjoyed the evening.

The second grade students, teacher Dixie Hesterman, contributed to the scenery by making snowflakes which were used to promote the winter scenery.

New Books at Library

Come in and check out more new books at the Kensington Community/School Library which have recently been added to the shelves. Adult fiction includes "The Shack" by Wm. Paul Young, "Adored" by Tilly Bagshawe, "Two Rivers" by T. Greenwood, "Running Hot" by Jayne Ann Krentz, "Red River" by Lalita Tademy, "Plum Spooky" by Sandra Brown, "Firefly Lane" by Kristin Hannah, "Fire and Ice" by Julie Garwood, and "Extreme Measures" by Vince Flynn.

The young adult fiction book, "3 Willows: The Sisterhood Grows" by Ann Brashares, and an adult non-ficton book, "Hello, Cupcake!' have also been added. IRS tax forms are also available at your Library. Librarian Amber Hardacre reports getting an e-mail from the librarian at Courtland stating that the Library there had also been broken into last week. This comes after the local library, grocery store, liquor store, and beauty shop along with other businesses in neighboring towns were robbed recently.

Senior Center Notes

Happenings at the Community Center

Nominations for Valentine King and Queen of the Kensington Community Center are now being taken. Boxes are at the Center and other business places for your nominations until Feb. 10. Voting will take place Feb. 14 at the Valentine Party at 2 p.m. when the royal couple will be crowned. Cookies, punch and coffee will be served.

Lions Club will meet Monday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. The Board of Directors will meet at noon Wednesday, Feb. 11; Pitch will be played Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. Double deck pinochle will be played Monday, Feb. 16 at 1:30 p.m. February birthdays will be celebrated Thursday, Feb. 19 at noon. The Kensington Food Pantry will be open Saturday, Feb. 21 from 1 to 3 p.m. A pinochle party will be Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.

Death of Mildred Gibson

Mildred Gibson, 98, of Smith Center, died late Saturday evening, Jan. 24, 2009. She grew up in Athol and graduated from Athol Rural High School in 1929. She was preceded in death by her husband Amos and an infant daughter.

Survivors include her sisters, Venita Rice of Kensington and Lois Hooper of Smith Center, and nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are pending as this is written.

Birth Announced

A son, Cole Michael, joined the family of Josh and Becky Kirchhoff, Jacob and Gracie of Cedar Friday morning, Jan. 23, at the Osborne County Hospital. Cole weighed 8 lbs. 1 oz. Proud grandparents are Pastor Dave and Susie Hutson of Kensington and Mike and Sue Kirchhoff of Gaylord. Great-grandparents are Eulonda Hagman of Kensington, Vic and Betty Kirchhoff of Gaylord, and Fran Pearman. .

Around the Community

Dianna (Susie) Olesen, school cook at the Kensington attendance center, is a patient at the Smith County Hospital.

Ken Wynn, father of Becky Saddler, is in the Smith County Hospital. Upon his release, he will go to Prairie Haven for extra care.

Esther Norden was also in the hospital in Smith Center and is now spending several weeks at Prairie Haven regaining her strength

Dale and Dorothy Detwiler and Darold and Joyce Grauerholz attended the Kansas Lions 2008-2009 Mid-Winter Rally in Salina last week.

Wayne and Jolene Beckman spent a delightful week's vacation in San Antonio, Tex., last week. They drove to Kansas City for their flight and were able to enjoy a short visit with their son, Nick and family.

Darold and Joyce Grauerholz and Elliott Nielsen of Minden, Neb., were weekend guests at the home of Harlan and Barb Stutheit in Atchison for their group's post holiday gathering.

A large crowd attended the soup and dessert dinner sponsored by the Kensington Commercial Club Sunday at the Legion Hall. It was a lovely winter day with a covering of snow, and it was a good time for food and fellowship. As this is written Monday afternoon, lite snow is falling and more is forecasted before the night is over with winter-like temperatures. No severe weather is predicted.

Prairie Haven Notes

Fun and fitness exercises and one-one sessions are held daily. The beauty shop was open Monday and manicures were given. Pat Hall played horn solo favorites with Janet Hoverson as accompanist Monday afternoon. All televisions were tuned to the Inauguration of President Obama on Tuesday . Bingo was played in the afternoon.

"What year is it?" kept everyone guessing during the afternoon session on Wednesday. First St.John Lutheran had the Thursday morning Bible study with visiting and coffee and cookies following. Cats and dogs were discussed in the afternoon. Bingo was played Friday afternoon. Watching movies and television along with putting puzzles together and playing cards are other entertainments.

St. John Lutheran Church had the Sunday Bible study and afternoon Holy Community Worship with Pastor Patsy Koeneke officiating assisted by Steve and Linda Miller. Ruth Bienhoff was the pianist.

Welcome to new residents, Esther Noden of Kensington and James and Marion Stephenson of Agra.

Erma (Lehmann) Seitz of Elwood, Neb., recently visited Doris Kuhlmann. Her husband Vernon is a regular visitor. Aleen Schalansky was with her daughter, Linda Ferguson, Sunday. Donna Farr and Lois Runnion visited Georgia Endsley. Pat Bienhoff visited her mother, Mae Donovan, and Mary and Montra Jones and Louie Bienhoff.

A number of visitors did not sign the guest register which is hard to locate due to the remodeling going on in the front area. Come in and see all the changes.
