Tribute to Mary
Anthony
Mary Anthony is a remarkable woman
especially when you consider she had
surgery for a fractured hip in late
October, spent time recovering with her
daughter in Manhattan and returned to
her home in Kensington in time to
celebrate her 97th birthday on Dec. 22.
Her son, Bob, of Oregon spent several
weeks with her, and they hosted many
relatives over the Christmas holiday.
Mary was born at Thornburg in
Smith County to Josias and Elsie (Overmiller)
Lambert in 1911. She had five brothers
and two sisters and was the youngest in
the family. She attended Rising Sun
country school and graduated from Smith
Center High School in 1930. She attended
college at York, Neb., during the summer
months and taught country school for 7
years.
She married Reed (Bub)
Anthony in 1939 and they made their home
in Kensington. He served in WWII. Three
children were born to this marriage, a
son, Jackie who died at the age of 3 1/2
years, a son, Robert, and a daughter,
Patricia. Her husband died in 1973 after
34 years of marriage. She has six
grandchildren and eleven
great-grandchildren.
Mary worked
while raising her children as a
substitute teacher in the Kensington
schools, as a clerk in Logue Grocery, as
an aide at Prairie Haven for 7 years,
and as Kensington City Clerk for 22
years until her retirement. She also
sold Avon products. She is active in the
United Church where she taught Sunday
School for 45 years. She is an active
member of the Kensington Senior
Community Center and often enjoys lunch
there. She has always had a lovely
vegetable and flower garden and the
meals are often complimented by tomatoes
and cucumbers from her garden.
It
is good to see Mary back at her home and
in the community giving cheer and
encouragement to all she meets.
