Community Supports Firemen and EMT's

A very large crowd attended the soup dinner Sunday noon sponsored by the Kensington Volunteer Firemen and EMTs. The chilly, dismal day made the vegetable, chili, and potato soup with condiments and luscious desserts even more tasty, and the fellowship even more enjoyable.

The Firemen and EMTs want to thank the community for their support on their annual fund raising event. They really appreciate your taking part and helping them to keep their equipment up-to-date for their safety.

We, residents of Kensington and the surrounding areas, want to express our appreciation to these volunteers. We know that when the sirens sound they are on their way to another fire or emergency. It's a wonderful feeling of security to know that they are ready to respond to any situation, be it a fire, car accident or a crisis which requires medical help. Be sure to express your gratitude for having them living among us.

Thanks Firemen and EMTs!!

Couples Honored at Anniversary Night

The St. John Lutheran Parish Hall was festively decorated with red flowers, hearts, and candles for the annual Anniversary Night honoring couples celebrating anniversaries in multiples of five years held Sunday evening. Red corsages were pinned on the honorees. Pictures of their weddings were displayed for all to reminsce and enjoy. The theme for the evening was "Love is all Enduring."

Linda Diercks gave the welcome and Pastor Koeneke issued the table grace before the bountiful potluck dinner was enjoyed by the honored guests, their families and friends.

Linda read "The Art of Marriage and then introduced the honored couples who were invited to share memorable incidents of their wedding day.

The program continued with a "Hilarious Fashion Show." Miss Drip from Goodness Nose (Bev Grauerholz) introduced the eight glamorous ladies who modeled the newest in hat fashions. They were Miss Soap Opera from Charring Cross (Janice Rose), Miss Pastry Face from Gastric Ulcers (Carolyn Mott), Miss Light O'Love from Twilight Terrace (Donna Westbrook), Miss Don't Strain Yourself from Down the Drain (Linda Miller), Miss Fanny Privy from Outback (Jeanette Stevens) Madame Hold-in from Bulging Hips (Carolyn Mott), Miss Po Po from Poland (Genny Rahjes), and Miss Betty Burp from Castor (Linda Rahjes). The audience was then asked to pick their favorite before the evening concluded with a lot of laughter and fellowship.

Honored couples present were Gilbert and Sharon Meyer (50 Years), Garen and Cathy Diercks (35 years), Joel and Connie Bienhoff and Doug and Wanda Rahjes (30 years); Greg and Robin Billings (15 years); and Leland and Linda Rahjes (10 years).

Lars Fisher Works for Missions

Lars Fisher, daughter of Karalee and John Fisher of Perry and granddaughter of Norma Larson of Kensington, has just released a CD of contemporary Christian music. Laurel, who will graduate from Evangel University in Springfield, Mo., in May with a degree in communications began the project in January, 2001 with the help of her teacher.

Laurel has been writing songs since the age of 9 when she began playing the piano and recorded a scripture song in 2000 and decided to launch a full-length project.

She had visited Home of Hope in Bangladesh in 1999 as part of a mission trip and again in 2000. Because of these trips, her interest in their work with disadvantaged youth grew. The title song of the CD was written in their honor, with all of the proceeds from sales of this CS until the end of February going to Home of Hope.

While music has been a large portion of Laurel's life, so has photography. She especially likes to "capture the true essence, the real personality" of those she photographs. Because of this interest, Laurel Fisher Photography was established in 2005. She photographs weddings, special events, and a variety of groups as well as taking all her family's photos. She states since she comes from a large family and is the oldest of eight with four brothers and three sisters, she makes plenty of family photos. She also was the main photographer of a mission group that traveled to Romania over her 2006 spiring break. She hopes to document missionaries and travel to Bangladesh again in the fall and has aspirations of future travel to Africa..

Although Laurel has no plans for a future CD, she plans to write songs her whole life because "to her, life is a song." (excerpts + from Topeka Capital-Journal.)
Around the Community

It was a nice to wake up to see the walks wet and light rain falling Monday morning. Weather forecast is for strong winds later today so the moisture is very welcome. Reports vary from .15 to .25, but the smell is refreshing, and the dust won't blow for a day or so anyway.

Norma Larson drove to Topeka on Jan. 30 to attend a piano recital of her granddaughter, Allegra Fisher who is a Junior at Washburn University. She got to see her new great-grandson, Aiden Thaine, son of Christian and Cheryl Fisher, who was born on Jamuary 29. Aiden has a sister, Angela Kay, aged 2. She was also able to make the acquaintance of another great-grandson, Myles Sterling, who was born to Lars and Kristi Fisher of Topeka. These are grandchildren of John and Karalee Fisher of Perry.

Sympathy is expressed to Carmen and Ron Rice on the death of Wayne Pruitt in Salina (obit in paper last week). Wayne is Carmen's brother-in-law as she and his widow, Jo, are sisters.

Prairie Haven Notes

The usual fitness exercises and one-one sessions were held each morning. Hair care was done by Jenny Reilley and manicures by Carmen Rice Monday morning. The states, Maine and Oregon, were discussed Monday afternoon. Bingo was played Tuesday afternoon. Humorous facts of love and marriage were shared Wednesday afternoon.

The Heartland Worship Center had the Thursday morning Bible study. Fellowship was enjoyed along with cookies and coffee. A guessing game of "What year is is?" was held in the afternoon. Sports events and the local news were discussed Friday morning and bingo was played in the afternoon. Residents enjoy cards, puzzle shows and movies during the evenings. "Hee Haw" and the Lawrence Welk Show are always favorites.

First St. John Lutheran Church had the Sunday worship in the afternoon.

Sympathy is extended to Virginia Munyon and members of the family of Marion Stephenson. He will be missed by staff and residents.
