TR Steering
Booster Club Meeting Sunday
The Thunder Ridge Steering Committee
Booster Club will have a meeting this
Sunday afternoon, January 4th at the
First St. John Lutheran Church, Highway
36, in Kensington at 4 p.m. Decisions
will be made on many items, so this will
be an important meeting. We will make
plans for our soup supper fund raiser on
January 20. Discussion will be held with
the committee on school/community spirit
and support. We will also be asking for
ideas for post prom and achievement
banquet. Plans will be discussed for the
school carnival and items for the
elementary and middle school. Please
make plans to attend and support our
school. Go Longhorns!!!!!!!

Hagman/Betzold Wedding Saturday
Patricia Hagman and Craig Betzold of
Manhattan were married Saturday, Dec.
27, at St. Teresa's Catholic Church in
Hutchinson. Parents of the couple are
Jr. and Nancy Hagman of Kensington and
Morris and Barbara Betzold of
Hutchinson. Eulonda Hagman is the
grandmother of the bride.
Patricia graduated from Kansas State
University with a degree in Milling
Science Management in December and will
be working towards her MA degree. Craig,
also a grauduate of Kansas State
University, is employed with DJ
Carpenter Construction in Manhattan
where the couple will make their home.
The wedding culminates many
hours of stitches of love by the bride's
mother, Nancy Hagman. She made the
bridal gown as well as all the
bridemaids' and flower girl's dresses.

Pearl
Ratliff is 95
Coming to enjoy dinner at Prairie
Haven with Pearl Ratliff to help her
celebrate her 95th birthday on Dec. 17
were Ken and Janice Ratliff, Lyle
Ratliff, Alvie Ratliff, Colleen Gale,
Dawn Veh of Hutchinson, and Janice
Miller and her granddaughter of
Stockton.

Baptism of Madison
McDowell
Madison Lauren McDowell, infant daughter
of Scott and Mindy (Bretton) McDowell of
Denver, received Holy Baptism at St.
John Lutheran Church during the Sunday
morning worship services with the Rev.
Patsy Koeneke officiating. Madison's
sponsors were Crystal Bretton, Justin
Bretton and Sharolyn McDowell. Melissa
Westbrook sang the special anthem, "Find
Your Wings."
Madison's baptismal
dress was also worn by her mother, Mindy
McDowell, and her grandmother, Elaine
Bretton, at their baptisms, and was made
by Lora Dettmer from her
great-grandmother Esther Norden's
wedding veil.
Present at the
dinner besides Madison's parents were
her grandparents, Sharon McDowell of San
Diego, Calif., and Darrell and Elaine
Bretton, and her great-grandmother,
Esther Norden, of Kensington were
Sharolyn McDowell of San Diego; Crystal
Bretton and David, Janelle, and McKenzie
Grau of Colorado Springs; and Justin
Bretton, Doc and Bev Grauerholz, Gary
Hainke, Donald and Loretta Norden, B.J.,
Melissa, Morgan and Maycee Westbrook,
and Bob and Donna Westbrook, all of
Kensington.

TR Classes Will Resume
Monday, Jan. 5
It has been a two-week vacation for
the students at Thunder Ridge School,
but they will return to the classrooms
on Monday, Jan. 5, at the usual time.
The Kensington Commuity/School Library
will be open Saturday, Jan. 2 from 9
a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be open during
the regular hours when classes resume
next week.

Senior Center
Notes
Annual Meeting at Senior Center on
January 14
Wednesday, January 14, will be the
annual meeting of the Kensington
Community/Senior Center beginning at
12:45 p.m. There will be election of
officers. All members are urged to be
present. If you wish to eat dinner at
the Center before the meeting, be sure
to call in your reservations no later
than Tuesday noon, Jan. 13.
On
Thursday, New Year's Day, there will be
a meal served at 11:30 a.m. at the
Center from the surplus food that was
prepared for the Christmas dinner.
Everyone is invited to come and enjoy
the noon meal and celebrate the New Year
with friends. Anyone is welcome.
Despite the extreme cold day, 32
persons gathered at the Center on Dec.
20 for an early Christmas dinner. The
meal was delicious and there was a huge
variety of pie. Thanks to all who
donated pies or other dishes. In the
afternoon the Christmas party and gift
exchange was held. Armi read some short
pieces on Christmas past which took the
group back to their childhood. Numbers
were drawn and each chose a gift. Six
persons stayed to play cards. The day
ended about 4 p.m. and the Center was
locked up for the weekend.
Thanks to Gary Hainke for the
substantial memorial contribution given
in memory of Grace Hainke. He requested
that the money be used for new light
weight tables. This gift makes it
possible for all tables to be new at the
Center.

Deaths of Local Interest
Myron Abbott
of Kensington died Monday, Dec., 29,
2008, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in
Kearney, Neb., as the result of a
tractor accident on the family farm
north of Kensington. No further
information is available at this time.
Scott McCorkle,
83, of Sabetha died Dec. 23, 2008. He
grew up in the Athol community. He was a
truck driver before his
retirement.Survivors include his wife,
Roma; several children; two brothers,
Don of Seattle, Wash., and George of
Aurora, Colo.; two sisters, Mae McDonald
of Smith Center and Jane Trent of
Phillipsburg; and grandchildren.. The
funeral was Monday in Sabetha with
burial at the Pleasant View (Myers)
Cemetery near Athol on Tuesday.
Sharon (Bose) Bell,
74, of Gaylord died Dec. 21, 2008, at
her home. She grew up in Athol the
daughter of the late Emil and Esther
Bose. She is survived by her husband,
Roy Dean Bell, a sister, Carol Eller of
Smith Center, four children and four
grandchildren. The funeral was Saturday
at the Simmons-Renschler Mortuary in
Smith Center with interment in the
Gaylord Cemetery.
Royce
Beckmann,
58, of Tuttle, Okla., died Dec. 23,
2008. He graduated from Gaylord High
School and Emporia State College. He was
preceded in death by his wife, Karen, in
April, 2008. Survivors are two sons and
a daughter; his mother, Clara Beckmann
of Kensington; two sisters, Nadine
Hayden of Andover and Beverly Smith of
San Antonio, Tex. and three
grandchildren. Evelyn Norden of
Kensington is his aunt. The funeral was
Saturday in Oklahoma. Both of his
sisters attended.
Sympathy is
extended to relatives of Ellen
Rust
of Smith Center. She lived in the north
of Athol community before moving to
Smith Center. She was a faithful member
of First St. John Lutheran Church of
Kensington.

day after Christmas.
Lawrence
Conaway of Athol was scheduled for hip
replacement surgery in Kearney, Neb.,
early this week.

Christmas family gathering were Mark,

Denver, CO; Lucas Scott, serving with
the Marines from Jacksonville, N.C.;

Vincent, Kim, Jess and Cade Rietzke, all
of Kensington; Stacy Rachow of
Phillipsburg; and April Rust of Smith
Center.
Louis and Kristi Seemann,
Alex, Ariel, and Ava of Overland Park
returned to their home Tuesday after
spending a long weekend here with Maria
Seemann and Martin and Tara Seemann,
Aleah, Andrea, and Kyler. Maria hosted
their early Christmas dinner and gift
exchange on Sunday.
Pat Clarke
of Cheyenne, Wyo., has been spending
time in Kensington visiting friends.
Holiday guests of Otto and Cheryl
Levin were Travis and Carmen Levin,
Keeten, Bella and Annalise of Allen, TX
and Joshua Levin of Waco, TX.
Laura Bienhoff of London, England, and
Jennifer and husband Ryan Bruns of
Marshall, Minn., spent last week with
their parents and sister, Paul, Deb, and
Leah Bienhoff.
Together for
Christmas at the home of Darold and
Joyce Grauerholz were Dr. Byron and
Leanne Grauerholz, Ellie and Ben of
Salina, Shannon and Kristi Rothchild,
Weston, Shelton and Hannah of Smith
Center and Julie Grauerholz of Hays.
Kay Kuhlmann of Ruidoso, N.M., and
Ann Vaughan of Manhattan were Friday
evening supper guests of their aunt,
Ruth Bienhoff. They came especially to
visit their aunt, Dorine Kuhlmann, at
the Smith County Hospital who is
recuperating from emergency surgery.
The Kensington Legion was filled
with over 100 relatives and friends
Saturday who came to help Lola (Rice)
Peters celebrate her 100th birthday.
Dinner was served to the large crowd.
Those present introduced themselves and
how they were related to Lola during the
program and told interesting
remembrances of her life. The birthday
song was sung to her before the birthday
cake was served to those attending.
Lola's only surviving sibling, her
brother Donald Dean Rice of Lowry City,
Mo., was among those attending.
After ten days where temperatures never
got above freezing and several snows,
the weather moderated on Christmas Day
for a very welcome reprieve and riddance
of most of the snow. Friday and Sunday
were beautiful days although a cold
front moved through on Saturday. The
forecast sounds favorable for a nice New
Year's Day. A blessed and happy New Year
to all our readers!!

Prairie Haven
Notes
The usual
activities were held the past two weeks
with Pastor Becky Saddler coming for the
Bible study on Christmas morning. A
party was held the afternoon of
Christmas Eve. The Heartland Worship
Center had the Sunday worship on Dec.
28. Helping with the worship were Terri
White, Georgia Kinyon, and Pauline
Richter.
New residents at
Prairie Haven not previously listed are
Jennie Capps, Ron and Helen Molzahn,
Myrtle Larson, and Guy Billings. The
staff and residents welcome you.
Sympathy is extended to Clara
Beckmann on the death of her son, Royce
in Oklahoma.
