House Fire Causes Heavy Smoke Damage
The Kensington Volunteer Fire Department
answered a call to the home of Duane and
LeAnn Smith about 7:30 a.m. Monday
morning. The Smiths were in Kearney,
Neb., where Duane was having extensive
tests, but it is reported that their
neighbor, Randy Countryman, went to pick
up their paper and noticed the front
door was hot. The house was filled with
smoke, and it appeared the fire had been
smoldering and started in the family
room. There is extensive smoke damage
throughout the house. The fire
marshall's investigation about noon
Monday determined the cause was an
accidental electrical shortage in a
wall.
Fire Chief Jeff Levin was out of town,
but according to those firemen answering
the call, they were there about 1 1/2
hours and several firemen stayed at the
scene to watch for any further
outbreaks. Pastor Becky and John Saddler
went to Kearney to relay the sad news to
Duane and LeAnn. A surgical repair had
been made on Duane's vein earlier this
morning which the doctors determined was
the cause of his problem, but they
wanted to keep him overnight (Monday)
for observation. Their son, Kent from
Washington state, is flying in to Denver
later tonight to be with his parents.

Exchange Student at Thunder Ridge
Tsai-Yuan Yu of Taoyuan, Taiwan, will be
attending Thunder Ridge High School for
the coming school year. Fanny Yu, the
name she prefers, was met by her host
family, Brian and Linda Dettmer and
Larissa of Kensington at the Hays
airport last Monday. Fanny is 16 year
old and will be a sophomore at Thunder
Ridge High School. She speaks English
and hopes to become more fluent on this
during her year with the Dettmers.
Larissa Dettmer, a junior at Thunder
Ridge, will be lots of help in helping
her adjust to the community.
Fanny had never flown before, but
managed to make the trip with no
problem. She left the airport in Taiwan
on Sunday at 11:20 p.m., landed in Los
Angeles, then on to Houston, then
Denver. and finally to Hays. She didn't
miss any of her connections. Taiwan is
13 hours ahead of us in time, so her
host family tells her that she came
"back in time."
A feature story will be forthcoming
after Fanny has had a few weeks to
become familiar with her new family,
school, and community.

Death
Eldon A Rietzke, 89, of Salina passed
away Wednesday, August 25, 2010. He was
born on a farm north of Kensington,
graduated from the Agra High School and
Fort Hays College in Hays and taught a
school in rural Smith County for three
years. He married Dorene Prior, a
teacher at the Kensington High School,
in 1950. He owned and operated Rietzke
Supermarket and Dry Goods in Kensington
for 30 years. They moved to Salina where
he was a meat cutter in several grocery
stores.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years,
Dorene, of the home; two sons and

Coldwater and Tracy and Cindy of Kansas
City, Kans; a daughter and son-in-law,

Around
the Community
Duane Smith will enter the hospital at
Kearney, Neb., Monday morning for
extensive testing and observation.
Floyd and Susan Gross are back to
long-distance trucking after being off
while Floyd was recovering from back
surgery. They left August 30.
The tragic death of 13-year-old Alicia
DeBolt of Great Bend took on even deeper
meaning and sadness in the community
when it was learned that Alicia's
mother, Tamra Conrad, was married to
Danny Conrad of Gaylord this past June.
Danny is the son of Marjorie (Grauerholz)
and Lawrence Conrad of Gaylord and is a
nephew of Doc Grauerholz of Kensington.
Another tragedy that shook the community
was the two-motorcycle double fatality
wreck early last Monday morning on
highway 36 on the Smith/Phillips County
line. Both men, in their 30s, were from
Phillipsburg. Sympathy is extended to
the families of Raymond Bannister and
Dustin Steeley.
The Kensington Legion Auxiliary and SALs
served over 300 at the fried chicken
dinner at the Legion Sunday noon. People
like to eat out for Sunday dinner and
appreciate these home cooked meals.
Donations will be used for Veterans' Day
expenses and to help the cheerleaders
and dancers who helped with the Monday
evening bingo events.
It's good to have the Highway 36
resurfacing project coming to an end. It
was especially stressful when they were
working on the stretch through
Kensington last week.
Gilbert Kuhlmann accompanied his
daughter, Sandra Rogers of Battle Creek,
Mich., to Branson, Mo., for a long
weekend where they enjoyed the sights
and shows. They also stopped to visit
Gilbert's cousins, Bruce and Harry
Larson in Mount Vernon, Mo. His son,
Dick Kuhlmann, came to help Gilbert
catch up with his lawn mowing jobs after
he came home. The grass just kept on
growing while he was gone. He states it
was a wonderful trip, but it is good to
be home again.
Arthur and Betty Smith met Dee and
Roseanne Panter of Elkhart for some
camping time in the Woodland Park area
in Colorado for several weeks. They
enjoyed the cool weather and the annual
tractor pull in that vicinity.
Vernon Kuhlmann accompanied Mildred
Hadley of Phillipsburg to the wedding of
his granddaughter in Arizona.The wedding
was held in the yard of the parents of
the bride, Teresa and Terry VanderPlas.
(This item is sketchy because contact
with family members if not available.)
Summer temperatures and wind has
returned, but a cold front it to move in
later tonight (Monday) which could usher
in some showers that would be welcome
again. Take a drive into the country
during these cooler evenings and see the
beautiful colors of the milo fields. (Do
watch and avoid the many deer and wild
turkeys that can create havoc to your
car.) The fall crops are all beautiful
and interesting, but the milo never
ceases to amaze this writer. The crop is
planted in mid-June, grows rapidly, and
reaches maturity by late September, and
the ripe heads transform into many
colors depending upon the variety.

St. John Lutheran Church to Host
Homecoming Picnic
The members of St. John Lutheran Church
of Kensington invite members, former
members, friends, and the community of
Kensington and Agra to join them in a
picnic on the church lawn Sunday
evening, Sept. 5, at 5 p.m. This will be
the finale of their 125th anniversary
celebration. The informal gathering is
planned for lots of visiting and
reminiscing. A program will be held and
Luke Rahjes has prepared a power-point
presentation of the history of the
congregation to be shown in the parish
hall. Heritage and new quilts will also
be displayed.
St. John Lutheran Congregation also
invites you to join them in the Holy
Communion worship at 10:30 a.m. on
Sunday, Sept. 5. Holy Baptism will also
be a part of the service which will be
broadcasted at 10:45 a.m. on KKAN/KQMA.
Sunday School for all ages will begin at
9:15 a.m.
The formal 125th anniversary celebration
of the actual date of the signing of the
charter of St. John Lutheran Church of
Kensington on February 2, 1885, was held
in February with the Central States
Bishop of the ELCA, the Rev. Gerald
Mansholdt, as guest speaker; however, it
was a stormy, snowy day. The anniversary
committee felt a more informal gathering
was needed on this holiday weekend to
make it possible for more to come and
join in celebration. Members of St. John
Lutheran are looking forward to having
you help them celebrate on September 5.
